Collaborative electric vehicle project brings together taxi industry leadership, electric mobility, e-hailing technology and fleet management expertise to support the future of passenger transport.

BYD Sandton, South Africa, 20 October 2026  – The South African Meter Taxi & E-hailing Association (SAMTEA), an affiliate of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), launched its E-hailing Electric Vehicle Project at BYD Sandton in collaboration with BYD, Bolt and Ctrack. The initiative represented a shared commitment to advancing a more sustainable, efficient and professionally managed e-hailing industry in South Africa.

The project brought together complementary expertise across the passenger transport sector, combining SAMTEA and SANTACO’s industry leadership with BYD’s electric vehicle technology, Bolt’s e-hailing platform capabilities and Ctrack’s fleet management solutions.

Through this collaboration, the partners aimed to support the adoption of electric mobility while helping to address the operational and skills requirements that accompany the transition to new vehicle technologies.

Collaboration that supports practical progress

The transition to electric mobility requires cooperation across the transport industry. Vehicle technology, access to e-hailing platforms, driver preparedness and effective fleet management all have a role to play in supporting successful passenger transport operations. The SAMTEA project brought these capabilities together through a collaborative approach that connected industry experience with technology and operational support.

For Ctrack, participation in the initiative reflected the importance of working alongside industry bodies and mobility partners to help translate innovation into practical value for fleet operators and drivers. As the fleet management technology partner, Ctrack was proud to contribute its expertise and Connected Vehicle solution to this initiative. Ctrack’s solution extends beyond traditional vehicle tracking, bringing together 12 capabilities across safety and recovery, vehicle and driver intelligence, and connectivity and fleet management.

These capabilities are designed to support three critical areas of modern e-hailing operations:

  • Safety: Helping protect drivers, passengers and vehicles through technologies such as panic buttons, driver monitoring, breathalysers and vehicle security solutions.
  • Fleet Monitoring: Providing operators with greater visibility into vehicle activity, driving behaviour and operational performance through Ctrack’s Crystal Fleet Software and connected vehicle technologies.
  • Operational Efficiency: Supporting more informed decisions around vehicle utilisation, downtime, fleet performance and operational planning.

For an industry where vehicle availability, safety and operating costs directly influence commercial success, connected vehicle intelligence has an increasingly important role to play.

As electric vehicles become part of everyday e-hailing operations, the ability to understand how vehicles are used and managed will also be essential in supporting a practical and commercially sustainable transition.

“At Ctrack, we believe connected vehicle technology plays an important role in making that possible. Through this collaboration, we are bringing together safety, intelligence and fleet management capabilities to help turn innovation into practical value for drivers, operators and passengers.” Kabelo Khaas, General Manager, Ctrack

Preparing drivers and expanding participation

The initiative also sought to broaden access to opportunities within the e-hailing industry, with an emphasis on preparing drivers for professional passenger transport operations and the responsible use of electric vehicles.

Skills development and technology adoption are important parts of this process. Supporting drivers as they become familiar with electric mobility can help build confidence in new technologies while reinforcing the professionalism required to deliver reliable passenger services.

As the representative body of South Africa’s taxi industry, SANTACO recognised the importance of continued innovation and participation across government, business and the wider transport sector.

More Than Electric Vehicles

One of the central messages to emerge from the initiative was that the future of e-hailing is about more than changing the technology that powers vehicles.

It was about creating an operating environment where drivers would feel supported, passengers could travel with greater confidence, and fleet owners would have the information and tools needed to manage their businesses effectively.

By bringing together electric vehicle innovation, digital mobility platforms and connected vehicle intelligence, the initiative represents an opportunity to explore a more integrated approach to e-hailing.

For Ctrack, this aligns with its broader commitment to helping businesses use technology and data to improve safety, gain operational visibility and make smarter decisions.

Looking Ahead

The launch at BYD Sandton was an important occasion, bringing together organisations committed to exploring what the next chapter of South African mobility could look like.

While the transition to electric e-hailing will require continued collaboration, practical learning and careful operational planning, initiatives such as this create an important foundation for progress.

Ctrack extends its appreciation to SAMTEA, SANTACO, BYD, Bolt, the City of Johannesburg and the other stakeholders who contributed to the occasion.

The future of mobility is not only electric. It is connected, intelligent and built through collaboration.
Ctrack is proud to be part of the journey.
